How To Grow

About How To Grow

Clear, sourced answers to the two questions every gardener asks: what to plant, and when.

How To Grow helps home gardeners get vegetables and herbs in the ground at the right time and keep them growing. The planting calendar works out your dates from your local frost date, and each crop guide covers spacing, depth, timing and the problems you're most likely to meet.

How the guides are written

Planting dates, spacing, seed depths and days to harvest come from university Cooperative Extension services, such as UNH, the University of Georgia, Virginia Tech, Clemson and UF/IFAS. Each guide links the sources it relies on at the bottom of the page so you can check them yourself.

Gardening is local. Your county Extension office knows your soil, pests and weather best, so use these guides as a starting point and adjust for your conditions. If you spot something out of date, please tell us.

What we don't do

  • We don't claim to have tested products unless a page says so plainly.
  • We don't give advice beyond what's on product labels for fertilizers or pest control. Always follow the label.
